A streaming service is easily recommended cause it is cheap but content is harder to be shared between users. These people (both distributors and content providers) have a business to maintain, shows to fund, servers to keep up, employees’ wages to pay, shareholders to appease and have to show that profits will grow every year (and not just marginally).Ī system like this is also harder to recommend to others because the content can be so easily shared. This business model of yours only really works in the favour of the consumer and is too big of a business risk for a distributor or a content provider to take. If it’s a streaming service I need to resubscribe. If it was a DVD or Blu-Ray that was damaged I would need to buy another copy. I can also potentially make unlimited copies of the content I’ve downloaded from your Subscription service, so if I lose or damage one HD, I can have access to that content from another source. The distributor is going to get less money as a Content Providing Service with Subscription than if it was a Streaming Service with Subscription. Sound familiar? That's because it is very similar to pirating. This is because only a minimal amount of people need to pay for access to your content initially, with others simply leeching of that generous person. By allowing this, a distributor is potentially leaving a lot of money on the table and the content provider (Such as AMC,HBO, NBC) is potentially getting less money than if doing the normal methods of streaming and DVD+Blu-Ray sales.

Now say that if a TV show is on-going and they are releasing episodes every week, I continue bringing in a HD or USB each week to share it with my friends, who then continue the sharing cycle. Say I share it with 10 people, and each of them then share it with 10 different people. Nothing is stopping these people from sharing this content with their friends and family. They show interest so me wanting to be a good guy say I'll give them my HD for a day or two and they can take what TV shows they want from it. I start to discuss and recommend TV shows to friends, family and work colleagues.

Fast forward a few weeks and I've watched lots of TV shows, with my HD containing several series and seasons of TV.

I get home, download an episode of a TV show I really like from your Internet distribution system and the episode is on my HD forever. An internet system is great for the consumer but not so much anyone else. If one person shares it with their friends, then they might share it with their friends and those people with their friends.

Thus with an internet distributor only 1 person could theoretically pay for content and he/she can give unlimited access to that content to anyone/everyone for free without them giving any extra money to the content creators. People need to come to your home to watch the recorded content. With recording TV, the content is only accessible from your cable set top box (I think that is what they are called), and thus you aren't able to spread the content as easy. The distributor then loses money as other people aren't paying to have access to that content. The problem is that with an internet distributor the content would need to be downloaded to your hard drive and thus that gives you, the consumer, the ability to copy the files and spread to a multitude of other computers for free. If I'm wrong, please inform me so I know for future reference. I'm going to take a stab in the dark since I'm not too entirely familiar with the ins and outs of recording cable TV shows.
